What is Limecello? – Limoncello made with Mexican limes

ALMA Limoncello is a Mexican reinterpretation of the Italian classic. Instead of yellow lemons, like those used in Italy, we make our limoncello using fresh Mexican limes. The result is a handcrafted liqueur that’s brighter, fresher, and full of citrus personality.

A bit of history: from limoncello to limecello

Limoncello originated in southern Italy — in regions like Sorrento, Amalfi, and Capri — where lemon peels were traditionally steeped in alcohol and served as a homemade digestif. Its intense, sweet-citrus flavor made it a beloved staple in Italian culture and cuisine.

Inspired by that tradition, we created a Mexican version using what we call limón — the green Mexican lime. It's more aromatic, more acidic, and deeply rooted in Mexican gastronomy.

That’s how what many abroad now call limecello was born: a tropical, vibrant, and less sugary twist on a Mediterranean classic — infused with a Mexican soul.

Why we call it limoncello verde, not limecello

In Mexico, the word limón refers to what English speakers call lime — the small, green citrus fruit. Yellow lemons do exist here, but they’re much less common and usually referred to as limón amarillo.

So even though our liqueur is made with limes, we call it limoncello, because in our culture, lime is limón.

That said, in places like the U.S. and Europe, many people refer to our product as limecello — to highlight the ingredient difference. And we welcome that. It shows that this is something distinct, a bold reinterpretation rooted in Mexico, not Italy.

How to enjoy limecello?

You can enjoy ALMA Limoncello in many ways:

Our favorite? The ALMA Limecello & Tonic:
